Orthodontics
There are now a number of orthodontic appliances that can be fitted to the teeth to realign them. The brackets remain permanently on the front or lingual (back) surfaces of the teeth for many months or even years while the teeth are being moved. Cleaning around and under braces is extremely hard, even for dexterous and committed patients.
It is important to make sure the mouth is healthy before having braces fitted.
Orthodontic toothbrushes have been developed for cleaning teeth and orthodontic brackets.
Use a short back and forth motion to clean both surfaces. Brush also along the gumline and the biting surface of the teeth.
Use a specialized floss with built-in threader such as GUM® Ortho+ Floss.
Insert the rigid portion of the floss directly under the appliance.
Use the spongy portion to clean the intermediate elements.
Use the normal nylon floss to floss the tooth surface and below the gumline.
Use an interdental brush to clean between the teeth, the wire of the orthodontic arch and wherever there are larger spaces between the teeth.
Choose a brush size that is suitable for the space to be cleaned. Do not force the interdental brush into tight spaces.
